Retno Marsudi

As the first woman to serve as the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Indonesia, Retno Marsudi not only made history but also left a lasting impact on strengthening the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda at both national and global levels.
One of her key contributions was initiating the formation of the Southeast Asian Network of Women Peace Negotiators and Mediators (SEANWPNM), the first regional network in Southeast Asia dedicated to enhancing the capacity and role of women in conflict negotiation and mediation. This platform fosters cross-border collaboration and strengthens solidarity among women in the region to build inclusive peace.
Indonesia’s commitment to WPS was also exemplified under her leadership when the country successfully initiated and championed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2538 (2020), a historic milestone as the first resolution specifically addressing the role of women in UN peacekeeping operations. Unanimously adopted by the UN Security Council on August 28, 2020, this resolution reaffirmed the participation pillar of the WPS agenda and stands as a testament to Indonesia’s diplomatic leadership under Retno Marsudi.
